MOSCOW -- Severe frosts throughout Russia's Far East are threatening colonies of waterfowl on lake Baikal in southern Siberia, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported Saturday, cited by AFP. This winter's temperatures, which have plunged to as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius (-49 Fahrenheit), may well freeze the lake completely, threatening some 10,000 birds that winter there every year, scientists from the Baikal national reserve have warned.
